Thursday, August 7th, 1969: Merritt Mows Down 17 Tigers
Jim Merritt of the California Angels really put on a pitching clinic today at Anaheim Stadium I as he struck out 17 Detroit Tigers in a 4-1 victory. Merritt was simply magnificent as he held the Tigers to 2 hits and had no walks in the game.

"My fastball was okay," Merritt said, "but my breaking stuff really hurt them. I also have to thank my catcher for calling a great game."

When asked about Merritt's performance, the Angels manager shook his head and said, "Yeah, he was pretty good out there today. He was dominating today."

In 1969 Merritt has compiled a 11-8 record with a 3.07 ERA in 23 starts.
